Nicaragua takes another giant step in developing renewable resources for its energy needs.  Recently installed solar panels are about to come on line and generate more than 1.3 megawatts of electricity.   Nicaragua continues to push forward with renewables and they account for more than 40% of the countries power needs.   This drive for self- sustainability is a key pillar of the long term government plan to reduce oil imports and the create a favorable balance of trade.  This will become critical as tourism grows and there are more and more retirees in Nicaragua looking for warm weather homes.  It looks possible that Nicaragua will be able to keep up with the increased demand for electricity with the Solar, Wind, Geothermal, and Hydro resources so abundant in this country.  If so, it will set an impressive benchmark for other developing countries looking to grow development and sustainable tourism.
