Dr. Andrea Martinez has a natural curiosity about other countries and cultures, and it is because of this, in large part, why she is here at Gran Pacifica Beach and Golf Resort.
As a doctor in Ecuador, her native country, she had volunteered for Medical Missions for earthquake victims in April of 2016. Part of that endeavor was to ask international organizations for funding and help. In developing a page on Facebook, she found Help Them Help Themselves, a philanthropic Canadian organization which for many years has assisted with Corporate Social Projects in the Gran Pacifica Resort communities.
Invited by Patrick Hiebert, the director of Help Them Help Themselves, Dr. Andrea came to assist in the Medical Mission of 9/16 here at Gran Pacifica - a partnership was born. Dr. Andrea arrived back at Gran Pacifica in early 2017, and is now living in the community.
She wanted to become a doctor or a journalist. She ultimately chose to be a doctor, “as I wanted to help people, and that is the most humanist profession you can have. I wanted to educate people and learn, for me and my family, as my family is most important to me.”
She is bilingual, having gone to a bilingual elementary school in Ecuador at the insistence of her father, and visited the United States at the age of 9. She says her family was poor financially, and this taught her the value of appreciating what you have and the sacrifices that her parents made for her.
Dr. Martinez is a pediatrician. She graduated from Ecuadorian medical school, Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil, and worked at the Hospital Roberto Gilbert Elizalde. When asked her thoughts on working at the Roberto Clemente Medical Clinic III at Gran Pacifica, she said, “It is a great opportunity, with many challenges, being in charge of a clinic...as I have not done this before.” She also said what a nurturing experience it is to have such a good team here, because everyone is caring and generous.
She enjoys the medical missions, but is looking forward to following her patients’ health for a longer time, being able to see improvements and teaching prevention. “Prevention is the most important education, and it is the best investment you can make,” she believes.
Gran Pacifica and Help Them Help Themselves are lucky to have such a dedicated doctor working here. Dr. Andrea stated her purpose is to make the new clinic here work, so the communities can use it, and to have it open and running soon.
