Places to go in Nicaragua

From Managua, most of the classical places to be visited are located one hour drive or less: the national park of Masaya and its active volcano, the markets and their wide variety of native handcraft, Granada antique colonial city, Lake Nicaragua and its small islands "Isletas", gorgeous blue lagoons, the Pacific ocean and much more…

Masaya
Masaya Area, Granada and the Islets: First you can visit the Masaya Active Volcano & National Park, located few minutes from Masaya, looking down to the still active crater will take your breath away. If you feel so, you can hike up to the San Fernando crater (extinct) with very impressive views from the edge of the crater. There is also a small museum dedicated to the volcanoes history. Then you can visit the city of Masaya & its handicraft market, where you can admire and buy at reasonable prices unique pieces made by the locals, more than 150 shops offer all the items made in the area: wood, hammocks, leathers, ceramics, painting and much more. Later you can stop at Catarina Lookout and its impressive views, and enjoy a delicious typical lunch.

Then you can visit the typical village "San Juan de Oriente" home of the a ceramic manufacturers, the process did not change for decades. Possibility of purchasing ceramics.

Founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistadors, the tour of Granada will transport us back to the colonial times, with its classical and neo-classical buildings, antique churches and horse-drawn carriages! To end our tour, a boat ride in Lake Nicaragua will let us discover some of the 365 small islands "Isletas", as well as their fauna, flora and inhabitants named the "Isleños".

Mono
The Mombacho Natural Reserve and Canopy Tour: the Mombacho Natural Reserve and its tropical cloud forest, a paradise for nature lovers. Walking through the trail around one of the craters in the most surprising biological diversity, with incredible views to Granada, Lake Nicaragua & the Islands "Isletas" will make this journey magnificent !

Then you can go for lunch in a typical place located on the shores of the extinct volcano.

Also get ready to climb and swing through trees!! This is an unforgettable experience sliding down from tree to tree through seventeen platforms and bridges very safely built, overlooking the coffee plantations. It takes around 2 hours to experience this unique activity.

Nicaragua, Cerro Negro
The Cerro Negro active volcano: Born in 1850, it is one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Cerro Negro "Black Mountain" is the most recent of a group of four very young cinder cones in the central Maribios.
Laguna Nica
Laguna de Apoyo: Feel like having a break in a hidden paradise a few steps away from noisy Managua? 20 miles away from the capital, a beautiful small exclusive resort located in front of the waters of the Apoyo Lagoon awaits you. Feel like swimming in the warm waters of this crater lake or just relaxing, you’ll love it!
Leon
Leon City: Discover this historical city, located 60 miles/90 kms north of Managua. For more than 200 years Leon was the capital of Nicaragua and is still considered as the intellectual capital. It also features one of the oldest monuments in Central America: The Metropolitan Cathedral, built in 1747. The most beautiful art gallery in Central America: The Galeria Ortiz Gurdian.
Managua
Managua City: Destroyed in 1972 by an earthquake, the capital is beeing currently rebuilt. First you can visit what remains of the Old Managua before the earthquake in 1972: from the historical Loma de Tiscapa, you can see the ruins of Somoza’s Palace, as well as an exhibition of pictures corresponding to the years 1925-1972; visit the National Palace and its natural history museum, see the National Theater, old cathedral and central Park, as well as the new Presidential House. Also you can go to the Mercado Huembes (market), very huge popular market offering all kind of goods as well as handcraft.

Then you can discover the new downtown, getting built a few miles away from Lake Managua and becoming the business center with major companies, banks, restaurants, shopping centers and other attractions.
