Pacifica Golf Associates, Ltd.

UPDATE
The rains have started in earnest and Phyllis and I have left for Wisconsin where it has been unseasonably cold. Joe and the crew are still working hard and I will be spending a week out of each month there until full time again the first part of November. Much of their time in the "off season", will be spent mowing and maintaining an acceptable height on the massive vegetation growth that takes place as soon as the rains start. In a months time the weeds and growth can be 6 feet high with stalks like tree trunks. Some of this we will maintain by killing it with a spray of glyph sate and surfactant, especially the areas that have completely irrigated. Other areas we are now much better equipped to maintain due to the arrival of 2 flail mowers on the last container. One a 7 foot the other a 10 foot cut will bring our maintenance of these rapid growth areas under control. Also on the container were two sprayers which will allow us to keep the growth down on greens capes, tees, and areas difficult to mow during periods of rain.
Poles, wire, and electricity have been run to the maintenance shop, the clubhouse site, and the pump house. Hopefully Union Fenosa will finally turn on the power and we will be able to maintain the large amount of equipment required to build and maintain a golf course. During this off season we hope to do much more than the usual equipment maintenance such as oil, filters, sharpening, and fixing. Painting and special projects pertaining to equipment usage and projects to complete the maintenance facility will be undertaken. These include an equipment wash bay, water to various areas of the shop, electricity and air to various areas. The last container also brought many specialized tools, tire changers, paint sprayers, electric and pneumatic tools, and a near complete ASSORTMENT of SAE and METRIC NUTS and BOLTS! We are trying to eliminate the trips to Managua for small things in order to continue operation. Therefore we are building other small parts assortments such as electrical, various pins, tire items, filters, etc. Much of what we need can be found SOMEWHERE in Nicaragua. Thanks to our mechanic Manuel and Sadis in the office, they usually locate what we need.
On the course the tree pruning continues and we have almost completed the 18 holes. This has been a 11⁄2 year project and we can soon maintain our trees on a much more cost effective basis. We have also started the planting program with trees along Emerald #3 and #8 and we are moving existing specimen trees onto the course by backhoe. On a number of holes we will be transplanting many Nim and Guanacaste trees which have been pruned and selected for transplant.
The irrigation of the course is on hold until Nov.⁄Dec. when the rains quit and the irrigation crew returns. As stated in earlier updates, the large main lines have been completed and we can irrigate a full hole every 4 or 5 days. At this time the complete practice range, practice green and tee have been irrigatedand holes #1, #2, #8 and #9 of the Emerald. The large main lines are under the major boulevard and we have filled all the lines from well#2 next to #2 green and#8 tee of the Emerald course. Our main pump, a 1000 gallons per minute diesel has arrived and is ready to be installed and the 20HP electrical pump (used to keep the system charged) is on the way. Also the river pump to supply the irrigation ponding system is on the way to Nicaragua and the poles and electricity has been brought to it’s site on the river. That site has also been completed which consists of a large diameter deep well pit being fed water by intake tubes in and under the river. The spillway that will insure our supply of water, will be started and completed when the rains quit.
The plans for the clubhouse have been completed (both phases) and the plans for the building that will service the pools and tennis courts are complete. This facility will act as a temporary clubhouse while the main building is under construction. Also the first 2 tennis courts are under way with black dirt removal, grading, and base material being hauled. As you can see Joe, the entire maintenance crew, the irrigation crew, our staff and our construction partners are working hard to complete these phases of golf development. We will continue to do so and thanks to all those involved.
