Expats and vacationers alike will find dozens of things to do in Nicaragua. A place with an extraordinary history, delightful cuisine and beautiful vistas, Nicaragua has attractions and events to satisfy every taste and desire.
1. See the Beauty of the Antigua Catedral de Managua
The Ancient Cathedral of Managua is a poignant reminder that not even all beautiful things last. In 1972, the building was torn apart by an earthquake that rocked the city. It remained in disrepair for many years despite official promises to restore it, but restorations have begun as of October 2013. Even damaged, the exterior of the building remains, and serves as an opportunity to take beautiful photos. Local tour guides will share the history of this ancient building, and it remains a favored destination for visitors.
2. See the Aquatic Delights of Laguna de Apoyo
Visiting the Laguna is one of the most delightful things you can do in Nicaragua. With beautiful vistas and excellent restaurants, it's hard to go wrong with a visit to this amazing location. Click here to see some of the outstanding dining options you will have during your visit.
The Laguna is a body of water contained entirely in an old volcano crater. Warm waters, clean breezes and amazing flora and fauna make it breathtaking, and visitors can swim, hike or go boating to their heart's content.
3. Admire the Arts at Centro de Arte in Leon
If you love the arts and everything associated with them, you must visit the Centro de Arte in the city of Leon. The building itself was the seat of the country's Parliament in the 1800s and has a fascinating history all of its own. The art exhibits are divided into historical and contemporary works with emphasis on the Catholic religious art of the country, as well as new takes on pre-Colombian themes. Learning and an appreciation for fine culture await you at the Center of Art, and it is worth the trip to visit.
4. Explore the Natural Wonder of Mombacho Volcano
Another wonderful activity in Nicaragua is taking a hike among the trails of Mombacho Volcano near Granada. The drive up the mountain is incredible as you rise high enough to reach what are called Cloud Forests, a rare Pacifican feature that only exists in two places. Clouds and mist shroud the upper reaches of the area, lending an otherworldly experience to the entire visit. Four nature trails await hikers, and guides delight in sharing the flora and fauna of the region.
