That's why it might come as a surprise to learn that until recently, golf was not a major pastime in Nicaragua. As an increasing number of expats flock to this part of Central America, golfing is becoming more popular. Delve into the reasons behind golf's growth in Nicaragua and get familiar with some of the top courses in the country.

Rising Popularity of Golf in Nicaragua

There are several factors behind the growing popularity of golf in the country of Nicaragua, but two of the largest include increasing numbers of foreign investors and retirees as well as the increasing stability. In decades past, Nicaragua was known for political reasons rather than for its beauty, warmth and culture, but today these positive attributes are the first things most people think of.

In addition, more and more retirees from overseas are taking advantage of the low property prices in Nicaragua, which encourages new developments and the construction of golf courses for these new residents.

Nejapa Country Club

Opened for play in 1940, this is the oldest golf course in the country. In 1957, the entire course moved to a new location a little closer to the capital city of Managua, but the historic nature and name remained the same. As golf began to become more popular in Nicaragua over the past decades, Nejapa County Club underwent a large remodel and reopened to rave reviews in 2001.

Guacalito Golf Club

This is a much newer course with 18 holes that was only opened for golfers in 2013. Still very much in its infancy, the course is located along the Pacific coast and was designed by architect David McLay Kidd. While this is a winding and beautiful course, it also charges some of the highest membership and tee-off fees in the country.

Gran Pacifica Beach & Golf Resort

With a planned 9 holes designed by Tommy Haugen, the Gran Pacifica Beach & Golf Resort is set to become one of the most appealing courses in all of Latin America. A nine-hole courses named Emerald, truly are the jewels of Nicaraguan golf, and each offers championship challenges as well as shots suitable for beginners. Of course, part of Gran Pacifica's appeal for golfers is that you can live right next to the course, making golf a part of your everyday life without blowing your budget.
