The Magic Flute - High culture in Managua, Nicaragua

Does high culture come to mind when you think of Nicaragua? Not for most North Americans apparently because when I tell folks that I've just enjoyed the Bolshoi Ballet, a Spanish Flamenco and Duende ensemble, or just the other night, a performance of The Magic Flute by Germany's College of Music of Colonia, people are usually stunned. The performance was exceptional and the fact that all five women in it were exceptionally beautiful was a nice bonus. Â

Wonderful cultural events abound, and if you are in the right networks, you not only hear about them, but get invitations and great seats. My wife and I belong to an association, ICAN the German Cultural Initiative in Nicaragua, set up by the German Embassy to promote cultural events. We showed up to the theatre and had 1st balcony front row seats waiting in will call. Best of all, I timed the drive from the National Theatre home last Monday. 11 minutes. Now it just doesn't get any better than that.
